This is exactly what I was looking for. I have given the aerator a few trial-runs and with a couple of exceptions, am satisfied that it mostly does “what it says on the tin”
1. My small lawn is heavy clay that is very waterlogged. I deduce that it’s probably best NOT to use it when waterlogged, as the tines definitely become clogged/compacted under such conditions and don’t clear into the hopper as #i’d hoped. But, no matter, I will use it when ground conditions are more favourable.
2. The necessary butterfly bolts that are located halfway up the handle actually protrude into the space between the handle supports, which results in heavy bruising on the outside of the users (my) calves, just below the knee. I assume there is good reason for these bolts to be on the inside of the supports? Perhaps someone could advise me please?
Other than that, this seems to be a well built, robust bit of gardening kit that for a small lawn is a good budget alternative to electric holowtime aerators.

This is possibly the best Hollow Tine Aerater you can buy. A few years ago I bought a much advertised cheaper version and it was really hard work to use while it lasted (one season) so I decided to invest in the Handy model. It does the job effortlessly owing to the springs which really do assist as you pull up out of the ground. The build quality is really sturdy and well made. If you wish, you can remove tines if you only want to have a three tine version or need to replace a tine if spares are available, as you are supplied with a special spanner to do this. The handle of the spanner can be used to poke out soil from the tines when you have finished your work. I note that on the internet this is more expensive than others but from past experience I know this is the best and it’s money well spent as it is going to last a long time. My useful tip…when you are finished working with it and cleared any remaining soil from the tines, I pull a small piece of oily rag through each one to help prevent any rusting in the tines (but maybe they won’t rust anyway).

Foam handle grip not too robust, but did the job it was designed for.
